Health Minister Flags Off Mobile Medical Unit for Mamit District

Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) designated for Mamit—an Aspirational District—was officially flagged off by the Health & Family Welfare Minister, Pi Lalrinpuii, today from her Office Chamber at MINECO. The MMU is funded through the CSR initiative of TATA AIG General Insurance Company Ltd., in collaboration with Swasti – The Health Catalyst with Mission Foundation Movement (MFM) serving as the Implementing Agency.
The event was attended by Pu Lalengmawia, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of the Health & Family Welfare Department, and Dr. Lily Chhakchhuak, Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM). Representatives from Swasti and Tata AIG were also present, including Joseph Julian K.G, Senior Director. Devang Pandya, Vice President & Lead, CSR & Sustainability, Tata AIG; and Madhukar Sinha, President, Government & Rural Business, Tata AIG represented TATA and MFM was represented by its Executive Director, Pu Lalramchuanzela, along with office staff.
The Mobile Medical Unit will serve remote villages across Mamit District where access to doctors and healthcare services is limited. With a dedicated team comprising a doctor, nurse, and medical staff, the MMU will travel to these villages to provide medical consultations and also create awareness on various central government social protection and health insurance schemes.
The unit is built on a Tata Yodha pickup, costing around ₹12 lakh, and fitted with a fully equipped medical examination cabin. It is stocked with an X-ray machine and various testing equipment worth over ₹26 lakh, and includes essential support staff.
Chairing the programme, Pu Lalengmawia expressed appreciation for the joint efforts that made the MMU possible. He emphasised that although Mizos are small in number, unity enables impactful achievements, and such private sector initiatives significantly support the State’s healthcare advancement.
MFM Executive Director Pu Lalramchuanzela conveyed gratitude to the private companies for their support, noting that the MMU would be invaluable for people living in remote, hilly areas.
Devang Pandya, Vice President & Lead, CSR & Sustainability, Tata AIG, spoke about the company’s various CSR initiatives and achievements. Madhukar Sinha, President – Government & Rural Business, Tata AIG, highlighted the company’s efforts to strengthen access to health and livestock insurance for people in India’s border and tribal regions. He noted that they had already begun operations in Nagaland and intend to expand to other frontier states.
Joseph Julian K.G, Senior Director at Swasti, expressed confidence that the MMU will be highly effective and shared Swasti’s commitment to strengthening healthcare access for rural and remote communities.
The Health Minister thanked Tata AIG, Swasti, and MFM for their joint efforts. She expressed hope that the MMU would greatly benefit people in the most remote parts of Mamit District, improving early detection of illnesses and enhancing health awareness. She also acknowledged the continued support of private companies and assured that the State Government remains committed to partnering for public welfare.
Dr. Lily Chhakchhuak, Mission Director, NHM, remarked that the MMU would significantly strengthen the Health Department’s work in Mamit, especially during times of crisis. The Health Minister added that Mizoram’s healthcare sector has made great progress in recent years under strong leadership.
